Talk on "Infrastructure-assisted Autonomous Driving Systems" by Prof. Guoliang Xing

Infrastructure-assisted Autonomous Driving Systems

Abstract:

Autonomous driving is poised to revolutionize future transportation systems. However, recent pilot commercial deployments have raised widespread concerns about the safety of autonomous driving systems. In response, a new paradigm has emerged in recent years that leverages smart roadside infrastructure to enhance the limited compute and perception capabilities of standalone vehicles.

In this talk, I will discuss our recent work on infrastructure-assisted autonomous driving systems. First, I will introduce the first open smart lamppost testbed deployed on the CUHK campus, which offers various real-time services for autonomous vehicles. Second, I will present several novel systems that leverage roadside infrastructure to achieve real-time 3D perception fusion, visual simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), and online HD mapping with centimeter-level accuracy.

Lastly, I will reflect on the experiences and lessons learned from designing and deploying infrastructure-assisted autonomous driving systems over the past five years.

Speaker Bio:

Guoliang Xing is currently a Professor and the director of AIoT Lab in the Department of Information Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Previously, he was a faculty member at Michigan State University between 2008 and 2017. His work received six Best Paper Awards and seven Best Paper Finalists/Runner-Ups at leading international conferences, including MobiSys, MobiCom, ICNP, IPSN, IoTDI, and SenSys. His research interests include Internet of Things (IoT), Autonomous Driving, Smart
Health, Edge Computing, and wireless networking. Several mobile technologies developed in his lab were successfully transferred to the industry. He received the U.S. NSF CAREER Award in 2010 and the Withrow Distinguished Faculty Award from Michigan State University in 2014. He is a Fellow of IEEE.
