Talk on Collaborative Edge Computing by Prof. Jiannong Cao

We are very pleased to announce the following talk on collaborative edge computing by Prof. Jiannong Cao from Hong Kong Polytechnic University as per the following details:

Title:

Collaborative Edge Computing Enabling Distributed Intelligence

Abstract:

The emerging advanced IoT applications in industrial internet, autonomous driving, multi-robot systems, connected healthcare, and other areas demand larger scale network deployment, ultra-low latency, higher intelligence of the connected devices, and better decision making. In this context, centralized cloud computing would face high data transmission cost, high response time, and data privacy issues.
Edge computing seeks to alleviate these inefficiencies by moving the computation and analytics tasks closer to the end devices. However, existing edge computing research focuses on the capability of vertical collaboration among cloud, edge, and end devices, while neglecting horizontal edge-to-edge collaborations, suffering from unoptimized resource utilization, restricted service coverage, and uneven performance.
This talk focuses on future collaborative edge computing where edge nodes share data and computation resources and perform common tasks. It facilitates the evolution of IoT from instrumentation and interconnection to distributed intelligence. I will cover the major problems in distributed collaboration at the edge we are currently studying, namely collaborative task execution, distributed machine learning, and distributed autonomous cooperation. Solutions need to address challenging issues such as cross-node virtualization, distributed data sources, conflicting network flows, heterogeneous devices, consistency, and mutual influence during the training.
