Center for Trust&Digital Identity Research and Development

The NII has promoted three authentication projects, "Academic Access Management Federation in Japan (GakuNin)", "UPKI Digital Certificate Issuance Service" and "International Academic Wireless LAN Roaming Infrastructure (eduroam JP)", and has contributed to the construction and operation of the academic authentication infrastructure in Japan. Amidst the efforts to promote academic DX, on the other hand, we are receiving requests from various parties for making full use of a wide range of GakuNin and for upgrading authentication and authorization technology. There is a strong expectation for the further development of Japan's academic authentication infrastructure and the strengthening of "trust" in cyberspace, which is essential for federated authentication.

The NII has established the Center for Trust & Digital Identity Infrastructure Research and Development to meet the demands from academia and industry for more convenient, secure and reliable authentication infrastructure, while maintaining the stable operation of the existing authentication services. The Center will conduct research and development of authentication infrastructure technology to support the advanced academic activities of researchers and students in the academic cyberspace:

  • Research and development of identity (ID) infrastructure and authentication and authorization technology to promote collaboration between industry and academia.
  • Research and development of technology to strengthen inter-community collaboration to promote cross-disciplinary research.
  • Extensive research and development related to trust technology and digital ID.
  • Research and development of trust federation operation technology in compliance with international standards.

By making the Center for Trust & Digital Identity Infrastructure Research the hub for research and development of authentication and authorization infrastructure in Japan, we will promote collaboration not only with universities and research institutions but also with vendors, and further strengthen international cooperation and interoperability.
