Title:

Revolutionizing Traffic Intersection Control: Reinforcement Learning Meets Road Safety

Abstract:

Urban traffic management stands as a critical challenge, impacting both efficiency and safety. This talk unveils a paradigm shift that harnesses the power of reinforcement learning and safety integration to redefine traffic signal control at intersections. Starting with traffic efficiency, we employ deep reinforcement learning and real-time data to dynamically adjust signal durations. By mapping complex traffic patterns using convolutional neural networks, our model optimizes timings, bolstered by components like dueling networks and prioritized replay. Simulation results spotlight substantial improvements in traffic control. Turning to safety, we pioneer a novel concept - SafeLight. By integrating road safety standards into reinforcement learning, we ensure collision-free intersection operation. Multi-objective functions and reward shaping reduce collisions while enhancing mobility. Tests on real-world datasets affirm SafeLight's potential. This presentation unites these strategies, paving the way for safer, smarter, and more fluid urban traffic management.
