About NII

International Seminar House for Advanced Studies

The International Seminar House for Advanced Studies, or Inose Lodge, was built on land donated by Dr. Hiroshi Inose, the first director general of NII. His idea was to create an ideal place for interdisciplinary and international discussions.

Access by railways

Less than 90 minutes by Nagano-bound Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo Station to Karuizawa Station. Five minutes by car or 30 minutes on foot to the Lodge.

Access by car

Fifteen minutes from Joshin-etsu Expressway, Usui-Karuizawa interchange -> turn left at Usui Bypass -> turn right at Minamihara sign -> turn right at the fire hydrant sign -> turn left at the first Stop sign -> turn left at first crossroads.

Purpose

1 Domestic and international academic conferences, seminars, etc.
2 Public lectures and social gatherings, etc.
3 Research and training of NII researchers and staff.

User's handbook (PDF/1.12MB)

Includes detailed descriptions for use, i.e., guidelines for users, road map and walk map, facilities and articles in the lodge, manuals for connecting to network and printing, information on provision and dining, rent-a-bike, BBQ facilities, and so forth.

Application procedures

The applicant is required to fill out the application form (included in the "kit") and receive a permit from the department concerned. The form can be submitted from the first day of the month two months prior to date of use to 10 days before travel.
Applications by non-NII employees can be arranged upon appropriate referral from an NII employee.
