Nick Evans provides an introduction to the work of the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) which was formed in 1972 to serve, represent and strengthen the international community of non-profit publishers and those who work with them. He draws on some recent ALPSP research on 'Scholarly Publishing Practice' and looks at what makes non-profit society and professional publishers different. Reporting on some recent work on trends in membership of societies by Mary Waltham he also considers what societies do with their publishing surpluses and how ALPSP can support societies who have contracted out their publishing to commercial partners.
(John Haynes)
John Haynes provides a rapid history of scholarly journal publishing from the 17th century to the modern day with an overview of the main driving forces and trends at work in today's 21st century information market. The next part of the presentation will include a description of the key players (including authors, editors, readers, publishers and librarians) and their main roles. John will also report on the various ways learned societies organise their journal publishing - providing examples of self publishing, publishing in partnership with other societies or with commercial houses. In the final section of his presentation John will give an account of how the internet is dramatically changing the world of research and scholarly communication and the impact on publishers systems, processes and delivery mechanisms. This will provide an introduction to the next session titled "Evolving Business Models in Journal Publishing."
The presentation will compare 2 titles published by Oxford Journals Japan which achieved successful growth in very different ways. Some recurring issues in journal publishing in Japan will be raised with future challenges in perspective.
(Charlotte Brabants)
Charlotte Brabants, Editorial Director responsible for the US and Asia Pacific offices of Oxford Journals, provides an overview of evolving business models in the world of scholarly publications. This overview moves from a discussion of traditional models and the pressures that forced models to evolve, to cover current alternative models such as author funded models and various forms of licensing. Charlotte will move from this discussion of current experiments to other models currently under investigation if not yet widely used, such as usage based models.
(Tony O'Rourke)
IOP Publishing is a truly international organisation, with offices in six countries and customers in more than 120 countries around the world. In his presentation, Tony O'Rourke of IOP Publishing (Bristol, UK) will explain the importance of understanding the "customer" and the relationship the publisher has with the customer. (The customer isn't just the person placing the order for the journal). He will look at techniques which IOP Publishing uses to better serve the relationships from all parts of the Journals publishing cycle - from the reader, the author, the Journal Board Member to the librarian acquiring research content on behalf of their research community. He will also demonstrate one of the methods which IOP Publishing uses to better understand the relationship with their community.
