Australia has recently moved to introduce a new system for distributing block research funding to universities. It will move from a formula driven approach to a process similar to that currently used in the UK. One of the major differences to the UK system is that in the Australian version, the Research Quality Framework (RQF), quantitative performance measures, or metrics, will play a central role alongside peer review. Ms Butler chaired the Australian Department of Education Science and Training’s working group set up to determine the metrics to be used in the RQF.
The presentation will cover the major issues addressed in the selection of metrics, and methods chosen to take discipline-specific characteristics into account, and also the need to cater for early career researchers. It will also cover recent developments on changes to the UK research assessment system, and other parallel developments that are occurring, primarily in Europe. |
