Interaction and filling-induced quantum phases of dual Mott insulators of bosons and fermions

2011.08.19

  • Fig.1 ●Ytterbium atomic gas in a vacuum chamber
Small green spot in the center of the photo is the gas of ytterbium atoms irradiating green light with the wavelength of 556 nm. The size of the atomic gas is several milli-meter.

  • Fig. 2 ●What is an optical lattice?
We generate a periodic potential, so called optical lattice, onto ultracold atoms by interference of two counter-propagating laser beams.
We can control the motion of atoms by changing the laser intensity for the optical lattcice.

  • Fig.3 ●What is boson and fermion?
At absolute zero temperature, boson and fermion behave completely differently.
All the bosons occupy the lowest energy state. On the other hand, fermions also occupy the higher energy states depending on the particle numbers.
Such a difference between boson and fermion is known to play an important role in the physical property at an ultralow temperature.

Public lecture by Prof. Yoshihisa Yamamoto "Quantum technologies as the key to a new information society - Can quantum computers be really realized?"

2011.07.21

The modern computer has its foundations in the deciphering device Colossus used to decode the German code ENIGMA during World War II. For 70 years the computer has continued its evolution based on the same fundamental concept. However, even such computers have their weaknesses, and currently there is an international effort to realize a new type of computer that uses the fundamentally different principle of quantum mechanics to perform computations. I will give an overview of the current state of the art of the research.
