|| The system of Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research from Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan is one of the oldest ones, which is the funding system for researchers belonging to universities and institutes in Japan. The fund was allotted to each researcher by peer review under the application for their own research projects.
According to development of the science and technology, the research field codes of Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research have been revised every five years. By the middle of 2002 fiscal year, the large modification was discussed and pursued on the research field codes. A new revised table on research field codes was used from the application for 2003 fiscal year research projects.
This is the fifth and last report for 2003 fiscal year's version, that is, the encouragement fund for JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) fellows. As for other fund for research fields, the first report on humanity and social sciences, the second report on sciences and engineering, the third report on biosciences, and the fourth report on interdisciplinary and new area & large-scaled project funds were already published.
In order to educate young active researchers, JSPS has a special fellowship system. The Grants-in-Aid were allotted to the adopted JSPS fellows automatically to encourage their research activity. Therefore, the total number of adopted subjects corresponds to the number of young researcher candidates at each university and also to a degree of the role of each university educating young researchers. The total number of adopted subjects at 2003 has been summed up for each university and institute on individual research field, and compared to those of 1998-2002 which were reported previously. The large-scale national and big private universities, especially those originated from Imperial Universities, still played an important role to educate young active researchers.
