WAINS 4 (The Fourth International Workshop on Academic Information Networks and Systems) was held on the twelfth and thirteenth of February, 1998, at the NACSIS International Seminar House for Advanced Studies in Karuizawa. The workshop hosted 24 participants, including eight persons invited to attend from Thailand, and was a great success.
WAINS is an international workshop on academic and research information systems and networks in the Asian region. Held every year since 1995, it provides an opportunity for scholars from Japan and abroad to meet under one roof to present papers and give demonstrations. The latest workshop was the fourth in the series and a total of 13 presentations were made. A variety of approaches to the challenge of exchanging academic information in Asia via SINET-ThaiSarn international link were introduced, including teleconferencing over networks, satellite image transfer, multimedia databases, multilingual processing, and tele-supervising.
WAINS 4 was sponsored by a grant-in-aid for research by the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports, and Culture for the year 1997/99 (“Joint Study of International Exchange and Sharing of Academic Information Resources”, Project Leader: Dr. Kinji ONO) and an international research survey project funded by the Japan Foundation for the year 1997 (“Asian Information on Asian Information Super Highway”, Project Leader: Dr. Kinji ONO ).
