In order to compile “Union Catalog of Serials in European Languages”, NACSIS carried out a survey covering university libraries throughout Japan between November 1, 1997 and March 31, 1998.

A total of 863 institutions (1,259 libraries) have participated in the survey (as of May 18, 1998). This represents an increase of approximately 30% in the number of participating institutions, compared with the survey for the 1994 edition of “Union Catalog of Serials in European Languages”, which preceded it. The table lists the number of records submitted in various formats. Participating institutions that submitted survey data using electronic media (i.e., on-line system, CD-ROM system, magnetic media) accounted for approximately 80% of the total. Of particular interest is the fact that about half of all the participating institutions submitted survey data via our on-line system.
