Construction Status of NACSIS New Building

NACSIS currently leases a portion of building of the University of Tsukuba (Otsuka, Bunkyo Ward) and the Specimen Gallery in the Botanical Gardens, University of Tokyo (Hakusan, Bunkyo Ward). However, the establishment of a new headquarters building has been a priority ever since the founding of NACSIS. Funding for the new building to serve this purpose was approved in the supplementary budget for fiscal 1995, and construction work on this structure has been proceeding smoothly up to the present time.

The new high-rise building will have 23 above-ground floors and is scheduled to house a variety of functions related to the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture (MESSC) as well as other facilities. In addition to NACSIS, the building will be home to the Graduate School of International Corporate Strategy, Hitotsubashi University and to the Center for National University Finance, which will operate a large conference room capable of accommodating 500 persons as well as a medium-sized conference room for multi-purpose use.

The photograph on the left was taken in early April, 1998, and shows the building with construction approximately 62% complete. Plans call for completion in fiscal 1999. The new “intelligent building” incorporates measures to prevent fire and withstand earthquakes, and it will provide a new public face for NACSIS.
