Overview

For the promotion of research and education in the science and technology field, it is essential to strengthen a base of information infrastructure. Isaac Newton who stands at the origin of modern science also suggested this by likening himself to a dwarf “standing on the shoulders of Giants.” Promotion of scientific and academic research and their outcomes, that used to rely on the initiative of academics, has been influenced by governments’ science promotion policies and the development of commercial publishing distribution industry in modern society. Further, in recent years search of various possibilities has started towards the future in the wake of development and diffusion of digitization in the entire society, network environment in particular.

In Japan, activities of Cyber Science Infrastructure (CSI) and SPARC Japan have been developed led by the National Institute of Informatics (NII). The International Symposium aims to actively contribute to this trend. Knowledgeable speakers will be invited from home and abroad to share the future perspectives for scholarly communication through discussion, with the efforts of higher education institutions, research institutions, academic societies, and government organizations in the background.

Themes
(1) Promotion of scientific and academic research, and information sharing in digital environment, such as e-Science, on the basis of institutional repositories
(2) Issues of new publishing possibility beyond traditional models and copyright problems to promote the dissemination of outcomes of scientific and academic research.
(3) Impact of these development on higher education institutions

We welcome the participation from researchers who are in a position to produce academic information as well as established leaders like academic societies, publishers, academic libraries and information service institutions to the Symposium.
