In Japan, we offered the Japan Association of National University Libraries (JANUL) and the Private and Public University Libraries Consortium (PULC) discounts and other incentives for online subscriptions to the four English journals we publish as a SPARC Japan partner. Overseas, with the support of SPARC Japan we exhibited at conferences and took active steps to make our journals better known and increase subscriptions.

Subscriptions to the SCEJ’s three journals (Journal of Chemical Engineering of Japan, Kagaku Kōgaku Ronbunshū, and Kagaku Kōgaku) are available to university libraries at a discount as the “SCEJ package.” The first two titles are online editions; a multi-issue print edition published three times a year is available as an option. [The print edition is also sold with this same option.] Kagaku Kōgaku is published only in a print edition.

UniBio Press

UniBio Press, the only entity of its kind in Japan, is a package which provides the journals of six Japanese biological societies in electronic form. Subscribers include overseas libraries. Societies that wish to participate are welcome to apply. Digitization is no longer enough to bring journals to the world’s attention. The challenge for the future is how to make use of OA for existing subscribers.

Materials Transactions

published jointly by the Japan Institute of Metals and ten other societies

In the current fiscal year, Materials Transactions saw two notable developments:

(1)

We offered JANUL and PULC “consortium subscriptions” at rates discounted according to the number of subscribing institutions.

(2)

Japan’s first field-specific portal site http://matjournal.org/, which carries five journals in the materials field, including SPARC Japan partner journals, Materials Transactions and Polymer Journal, has about 12,000 articles online, receives on average 116,000 visits monthly, and has about 370 registered users.
