KISTI Researchers Visit NII for Joint Workshop

Researchers from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) visited the National Institute of Informatics (NII) on August 27 and 28, 2026, to hold a workshop with researchers from NII's Research and Development Center for Large Language Models (LLMC). The workshop focused on AI for Science and large language models (LLMs).

The workshop was held as part of the academic and technical exchange between NII and KISTI, which have concluded a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for academic cooperation. Its aim is to share the two institutions' expertise, technologies, and latest research findings, as well as to discuss opportunities for continued collaboration and joint research between Japan and the Republic of Korea.

The workshop began with Dr. Kyong-Ha Lee of KISTI introducing South Korea's strategic initiatives and current developments in AI for Science. Project Professor Koichi Takeda of NII then provided an overview of LLM research and development at NII and LLMC.

From KISTI, Dr. Gwangseon Jang presented the development of KONI LLM and its latest research achievements, while Dr. Jaemin Cho introduced recent research outcomes related to KONI-V. Dr. Changmin Sung and Mr. Jaeyeon Byun also gave a presentation on LLMOps and technologies for supporting document-grounded form filling.

From NII, Project Assistant Professor Takashi Kodama and Junfeng Jiang introduced model training initiatives undertaken by LLM-jp. Professor Akiko Aizawa also delivered a presentation on scientific-domain LLMs and research in AI for Science.

Each presentation was followed by an open discussion on emerging technologies supporting AI for Science, current research challenges, and opportunities for future collaboration. The workshop provided a valuable opportunity for researchers from both institutions to exchange expertise and perspectives and to deepen their mutual understanding toward continued research exchange and cooperation.
