NACSIS has provided the “NACSIS-CIS (Career Information Service)” that collects information on openings for scholars at Japanese organizations and it available to the public via the World-Wide Web since May 20, 1997.

In order to improve the service, the scope of positions expanded to include the following on September 1, 1998.

1 Items recorded in database (Underlined portions indicate newly added categories)

1. Researchers above the assistant level, and others such as postdoctoral researchers in universities, University of the Air, junior colleges and colleges of technology
2. Researchers above the assistant level, and others such as postdoctoral researchers in inter-university research institutions, the National Center for University Entrance Examinations, the National Institution for Academic Degrees and the Center for National University Finance
3. Researchers in related facilities or organizations of the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture, and the Agency of Cultural Affairs.
4. Researchers in private academic research institutes established under article 34 of the Civil Law and authorised by the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture

2 Usage status (current as of December 31, 1998)

Since the service was first made available, it has been used by a large number of persons, the details of which are shown below. It is our hope that usage will continue to increase.

1. Number of calls for scholars provided (cumulative): 407 institutions, 3,049 records (3,712 openings)
2. Number of computers accessing the service (cumulative): Approx. 441,000
