Report on NACSIS Symposium for FY 1998

NACSIS conducted a “NACSIS Symposium for Fiscal 1998 ” in Osaka Prefectural Central Library Lighty Hall (Thursday November 5) and Japan Education Hall (Friday November 20).

The themes of these symposia include research and development work and project activities of NACSIS, as well as trends related to the overall academic information system. They includes presentations and discussions, and they are held in the Kansai and Tokyo regions each year.

The theme of this year's symposium was “Dissemination and Protection of Academic Information -- Network Security Management.” Three lecturers from outside NACSIS as well as two NACSIS staffers provided presentations in their fields of specialization, with the topics covered including an overview of “network security,” a topic that has recently received a great deal of attention, in the Internet environment, which is not limited to the distribution of academic information and today has expanded to embrace many aspects of our daily lives; specific applied examples; and comments on future prospects.

The session at the Kansai venue was attended by 216 persons, and that at the Tokyo venue by 352 persons. In addition to employees of university libraries and data processing centers, attendees from a wide range of fields, such as university faculty, company employees, and persons working for research institutions, listened to the presentations in both venues with great attention.

The symposium opened at the Tokyo venue with an address by NACSIS Director General Hiroshi INOSE, and at the Kansai venue with an address by Deputy Director General Hitoshi INOUE, . Five presentations were given during the morning and afternoon portions of the sessions. A high level of interest was indicated by the large number of questions posed by members of the audience during the question and answer period following the presentations.
