NACSIS Information Processing Seminar in Karuizawa for FY 1998

As part of its program of computer literacy training for university employees aimed at supporting academic research, NACSIS held an ÒInformation Processing Seminar in KaruizawaÓ at the International Seminar House for Advanced Studies (Karuizawa-machi, Nagano Prefecture) over a period of five days, from August 10 to August 14, 1998. A total of seven persons from seven institutions participated. The goal of the seminar was to train the participants in the latest information processing technologies available in the Internet environment. The theme for this, the initial fiscal year in which this seminar is being offered, is the Java programming language. Professor Makoto Ikeda from the University of Aizu was invited to be the instructor for the seminar, and he was assisted in guiding the trainees by Professor Hiromichi Hashizume and Research Associate Hironobu Gotoda, both affiliated with NACSIS. The curriculum centered around practice in programming, with each participant utilizing a laptop PC provided by the Seminar House. A wide range of topics were covered, including the basics of the Java programming language and the use of Java in the Internet environment. Also, a special lecture on the development of the Java programming language was presented by Mr. Masato Kaneko of Nihon Sun Microsystems K.K.

The International Seminar House for Advanced Studies, where the seminar was held, is a facility that was completed in 1997. In addition to seminar rooms and research facilities, it houses guest rooms and a cafeteria. It is suitable for a wide range of uses, including short-term workshops or seminars, international meetings, and medium-term residential seminars, such as this one.

The practice problems used in the seminar are available for public access on the following Web page. http://www.nacsis.ac.jp/hrd/HTML/Karuizawa/h10-karuizawa-hokoku.html
