VISITORS

During 1996 NACSIS had the pleasure of hosting many guests from abroad. The total number of guests amounted to 156 from 83 institutions in 14 countries.

Prof. Hwa-Wei Lee and Dr. Salinda Arthur, OHIO University
Prof. Hwa-Wei Lee, Dean of Universty Libraries, OHIO University and Dr. Salinda Arthur, Assistant Dean visited NACSIS on August 14, 1996, attended by Prof. KIM Yong Won, Associate Professor of the Faculty of Cultural Information Resources, Surugadai University.
After they attentively watched demonstrations of NACSIS-CAT, NACSIS-ILL, NACSIS-IR and NACSIS-ELS by NACSIS Staff, they had a meeting with Prof. Eisuke NAITO, Director of Science Information Research Division, Research and Development Department, NACSIS.

Dr. Suzine Har Nicolescu, The City University of New York
Dr. Suzine Har Nicolescu, Chief Librarian & Professor of Medgar Evers College Library, The City University of New York, visited NACSIS on August 15, 1996. She had previouly visited NACSIS on August 17, 1992, and enjoyed a meeting with Prof. Hitoshi INOUE (present Deputy Director General of NACSIS).
This time, she attentively watched demonstrations of NACSIS-CAT, NACSIS-ILL, NACSIS-IR and NACSIS-ELS performed by NACSIS Staff, then held a very significant discussion with Prof. NAITO on collaboration in the area of bibliographic control.

Six NWEC Trainees
A group of trainees of the National Women's Education Center (NWEC) visited NACSIS on August 27, 1996:

The visitors come from various countries in Asia and the Pacific, each one being selected by their own government as a qualified professional for NWEC training. They are expected to lead the country in the activity of information processing on woman's issues and in constructing a woman's information network in the region.

After meeting with Prof. INOUE, the visitors watched demonstrations of NACSIS-CAT, NACSIS-IR and NACSIS-ELS presented by NACSIS staff. They also had discussions with Prof. Akiko AIZAWA and Prof. Yusheng JI, faculty of Research and Development Department, to deepen their understanding of the current status of Japanese academic information systems.

Ms. Ximena Feliu Silva and Ms. Marialyse Delano, the Library of Congress of Chile
Ms. Ximena Feliu Silva, Director of the Library of Congress of Chile and her librarian Ms. Marialyse Delano Serrano visited NACSIS on September 6, 1996. Their visit was made possible by the introduction by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and the arrangement by Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture.
First they enjoyed a meeting with Prof. Hitoshi INOUE, then they watched demonstrations of NACSIS-CAT and NACSIS-ILL by Prof. Akira MIYAZAWA and staff of the Catalog Information Division, NACSIS-IR and NACSIS-ELS by Prof. Jun ADACHI and staff of Database Divison. During the demonstrations, there were active question and answers.

Ms. Harriette HEMMASI and Ms. Linda LANGSCHIED Rutgers University
Ms. Harriette HEMMASI, Head, Technical Services of Lourie Music Library, and Ms. Linda LANGSCHIED, Electronic Resources Librarian of Alexander Library, from Rutgers University visited NACSIS on September 12, 1996. Ms. HEMMASI is one of the most exellent music cataloger in the United States, and Ms. LANGSCHIED is committed to build the Academic Communication Center project that will provide access to various electronic resources for humanities and social sciences scholars.

In addition to very significant meetings with Prof.Akira MIYAZAWA and Prof. Eisuke NAITO, they attentively watched demonstrations of NACSIS-CAT and NACSIS-ILL performed by NACSIS Staff, NACSIS-IR and NACSIS-ELS by Prof. NEGISHI. It is the hottest topic for both of visitors and NACSIS that provide library services using electronic resources, and we built relationship mutually beneficial.

Ms. UTARI Budihardjo invited to NACSIS
Ms. UTARI Budihardjo, Indonesian Center for Scientific Documentation & Information, Indonesian Institute of Sciences, also Indonesian representative UNESCO/ASTINFO was invited by NACSIS from October 6 to 14, 1996 under the program "Study on Demand and Supply of Japanese Scholarly Information Abroad" lead by Prof. Hitoshi INOUE.

She held discussion with Prof. Eisuke NAITO, on the future possiblities for cooperative development of human resources. After the visit to NACSIS, she attended SISNAP'96 at the University of Library and Information Science.

Dr. Peter Tatai and Dr. Tibor Tron, Technical University of Budapest Dr. Peter Tatai, Head of the Department of Telecommunications and Telematics, Technical University of Budapest, and Dr. Tibor Tron, Deputy Head of the department, visited NACSIS during the afternoon of October 9, 1996.
After a general introduction of NACSIS given by Director General Dr. Hiroshi INOSE, the visitors heard a presentation on the current SINET given by staff of the Research and Development Department. They also introduced research activities in which their department is involved to their hosts.

Dr. Tatai and Dr. Tron then watched demonstrations of NACSIS-CAT, NACSIS-ILL, NACSIS-IR and NACSIS-ELS with great interest, especially in NACSIS-ELS. After the demonstration, they exchanged opinions with Dr. INOSE and Professor Dr. Shoichiro ASANO on information telecommunications network and information processing.

Prof. Suzan Hockey, Rutgers University, and Dr. Richard Gartner, Oxford University
Prof. Suzan Hockey, director of the Center for Electronic Text in the Humanities, Alexander Library, Rutgers University and Dr. Richard Gartner, Librarian of Pearson New Media Library, the Bodleian Library, Oxford University visited NACSIS on October 17, 1996.

During a very significant meeting with Prof. Kinji ONO, Director of Research and Development Department, Prof. NAITO, Associate Professor, Dr. Keizo OYAMA, Dr. Hiroshi TSURUOKA and Ms. Mika KOSHIZUKA, they watched demonstrations of NACSIS-IR, NACSIS-ELS and fulltext database retrieval performed by NACSIS Staff with interest, and had a meaningful discussion on SGML-based fulltext databases.

Dr. Bertil Folliot, Univeristy of Paris VI made a Lecture
Dr. Bertil Folliot, Assistant Professor of Large Scale Computing, University of Paris VI, visited NACSIS on November 27, 1996. Dr. Folliot is collaborating with Prof. Akifumi MAKINOUCHI of Kyushu University and Dr. FrŽderic Andres of NACSIS on advanced DBMS.
He gave a special lecture on "Fault Tolerant Load Sharing for Parallel Applications", for members of Research and Development Department, NACSIS.
