NACSIS at Database '96 Tokyo

On three days in September, 1996, from the 11th (Wednesday) to 13th (Friday), Ikebukuro Sunshine City Convention Center was the site of "Database '96 Tokyo". Hosted by the Database Promotion Center and the Japan Database Industry Association, this assembled under one roof a vast array of Japanese and foreign databases and electronic information services.

Each year the exhibition receives over 30,000 visitors. In its eighth year, it was visited by a total of 34,014 persons.

The National Center for Science Information Systems (NACSIS) participated in the exhibition this year, as in the last, with a display explaining its activities and promoting the dissemination of scientific information. It gave demonstrations of its Internet Electronic Library Service (NACSIS-ELS), Information Retrieval Service (NACSIS-IR), Catalog and Inter-Library Loan Service (NACSIS-CAT/ILL), and scientific journal catalog CD-ROMs. Interest was particularly high among researchers regarding its Electronic Library Service, scheduled to start full-scale operations in April 1997. Close attention was paid to the Information Retrieval Service. Numerous questions were asked about the databases accessible. Librarians were interested in the scientific journal catalog CD-ROMs and asked about search methods, the sales date of the CD-ROMs, method of purchase, etc.
