No.14
October,1996
In fiscal 1995, there were 24 academic societies participating in the trial system, and 56 magazines/journals, 55,000 papers and 450,000 pages of data were prepared. These data are now being processed for inclusion in the electronic library system. New academic societies will be encouraged to participate during the current fiscal year and data will continue to be compiled for the formal service.
The academic information to be provided by the electronic library system includes those papers and articles that appear in the magazines and journals issued by various academic societies and other related organizations. The information is converted into electronic form under an agreement with those institutions. It is important to respect the copyrights of the publishers and to smoothly circulate the academic information, so discussions will be held with the participating institutions before the formal service starts in next fiscal year. It is to be hoped that as many academic societies as possible will contribute data to the NACSIS-ELS.
The basic policy of the service has to be studied in more detail. We anticipate that the users will be mainly organizations such as academic societies and universities, and members of the organizations will use the system. As soon as the basic policy has been settled, the electronic library service will be announced and user applications will be invited. Prospective users will be requested to register with the system upon starting formal service.
Matters related to service charges and copyright will be decided through discussions with the related institutions.
The much-requested service of the "Japanese Periodicals Index" is now available from June 1, 1996 to overseas NACSIS-IR users, as a result of discussions with the National Diet Library.
