Construction of Wide-area ATM Switch Network
Connection of New Communication Line with the U.K.

1. Construction of wide-area ATM exchange networK
The NACSIS network planned to partially introduce the ATM technology using multimedia multiplexers (ASX-200) and this was implemented last year. In order to build up a wide-area ATM network to interconnect the ATM exchanges and LANs among academic institutes during fiscal 1996, high-performance ATM exchanges (NS8000) and nodes were installed at 28 locations at various places. The first stage of the wide-area ATM network operating with a permanent virtual circuit (PVC) communication is due to start in October 1996, and the second stage operating with a switched virtual circuit (SVC) communication from March 1997.

2. Opening of new connection line with the U.K.
On August 8, 1996, a new connection between Japan and the U.K. was opened using an international leased line of 2 Mbps. This connection will significantly improve the communication situation with the U.K (and Europe) via SINET. Accordingly, the existing international leased line (9.6 Kbps) for packet switched networks connected between Japan and the British Parliamentary Library (BL) and others will be eliminated.

ATM exchange (NTT, MHN-A)
A high-performance ATM exchange to accommodate the campus ATM-LAN (processing of 2.4 Gbps or 10 Gbps).
Multimedia multiplexer (Fore Systems, ASX-200)
Line-concentrates the CLADs and ATM routers and transmits and receives data to and from the ATM exchange at the main node or node.
High-performance IP router (Nestar, Giga Router)
A high-speed, high-performance IP router with interfaces for tFDDI, ATM, etc.
CLAD: Cell assembler/disassember (Cascade, B-STDX9000)
Assembles and disassembles data frames of the frame relay exchange or frame relay into cells and transmits or receives to and from the ATM exchange at the main node or node via multiplexer.
Line concentrator (Fujitsu, E-5340)
Line-concentrates the terminals with the packet interface (X.25).
Packet exchange (Fujitsu, FETEX5000)
Stores and exchanges data in packet form with computer systems.
Clustered IP router (NTT, BL-3000)
Performs the routing control and other functions among campus information networks for the TCP/IP protocol communication.
