The 4th SPARC Japan Seminar 2012
"Open Access Journal: Funder-Researcher Collaboration in Science Communication"
Time: August 23, 2012, 13:30 - 17:00
Place: National Institute of Informatics, 20F Lecture Room 1, 2

The event was held on August 23, 2012. Around 70 people participated.

Outline
In 2003, the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI) recommends two strategies of the fulfillment of Open Access (OA). One is "self-archiving"; scholars deposit their journal articles in open electronic archives such as institutional repositories of universities and research institutions, or the government-affiliated ones like PubMed Central. The other is "open access journals"; scholars launch a new generation of journals committed to open access and publish their articles in them. Now there are 8,000 titles around the world. (cited by Lund university)
Some commercial publishers are entering the market of open access journals and recently new media, "Open Access MegaJournals", is coming up. Under the rapid development of distribution of electronic information in academic field, how will the communication change in future?
This time we are inviting Mark Patterson, Ph.D., Managing Executive Editor of "eLife". "eLife" is Open Access Journal specialized in biomedical and life sciences research to be first published this winter with the support of The Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Max Planck Society and the Wellcome Trust, which APC is free for the time being.
In this seminar, we will talk about "funder-researcher collaboration in science communication" as a main theme and also carry out more in-depth discussions on "Open Access publishing" both now and in future. We welcome many people to participate in this opportunity. (On the day, interpretation service is available.)

Speaker
Mizuki Ichihara (DRF, University of Miyazaki Library)

Ms. Ichihara has been working as a library staff since 2002 and specialized in digital contents management. From 2007 to 2011, she was involved in University of Miyazaki Academic Repository.

Mark Patterson (Managing Executive Editor, eLife)

Mark Patterson started his career as a researcher in genetics before moving into scientific publishing in 1994 as the Editor of Trends in Genetics. After a few years at Nature, where he was involved in the launch of the Nature Reviews Journals, he moved to PLoS in 2003. As the Director of Publishing, Mark helped to launch several of the PLoS Journals and was one of the founders of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association. Mark is also a member of the UK Open Access Implementation Group. In November 2011, Mark was appointed as Managing Executive Editor of eLife.

Hirohisa Saito, MD, PhD
(Deputy Director, National Research Institute for Child Health and Development
 Editor-in-Chief, Allergology International)

Prof. Hirohisa Saito graduated from The Jikei University in 1977 and became a pediatrician. In 1986 he went to USA and served as a Research Fellow at Department of Immunology, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1986. After he came back to Japan in 1988, he got a position at Department of Allergy, National Children's Hospital, former of National Research Institute for Child Health and Development. He is currently Deputy Director at the Institute, after working as Head, Department of Allergy and Immunology. He also serves as a visiting professor at Juntendo University and Toho University to train young researchers. From 2005 he has been an Editor-in-Chief of Allergology International, the official journal of Japanese Society of Allergology. He also used to be an Editor of Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology, the official journal of American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology. Through these experiences, he has become familiar with editorial work in medical journals.

Yosuke Kojima (Karger Japan, Managing Director)

Joined Karger Japan in 2011 and being in charge of Karger Libri and S. Karger operation. Prior to joining Karger, he had worked for ProQuest and being responsible for its operation in Japan, contributing to distribution of academic information.

Abstract
Current Trend of Open Access
(Mizuki Ichihara)

I will review the Open Access (OA) publishing which is recently pushed into the spotlight, outline "eLife" briefly, and introduce various comments on it. In addition, I will provide information at the beginning of the seminar in order to understand and discuss OA publishing supported by research funding agencies and OA publishing itself both now and in future.

eLife - a researcher-led, open-access journal for life and biomedical science
(Mark Patterson)

In June 2011, three of the world's leading research funding agencies - the Wellcome Trust, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Max Planck Society - announced plans to launch a top-tier, open-access research journal covering the life and biomedical sciences. The key priorities of eLife are to establish a swift and decisive editorial process, which is run by a community of active researchers, and to explore ways in which digital media can be used to maximum effect in the communication of new research. eLife therefore represents a direct effort by funding agencies to accelerate the transformation of research communication so that it is adapted to digital media, and reflects the view that the communication of research results is an integral part of research itself.
Mark will describe the motivations and goals of eLife, the progress so far, and longer term, how the eLife project will be a catalyst for innovation in research communication.

Some changes in "Allergology International" and the role of Editor-in-Chief in a medical journal
(Hirohisa Saito)

Allergology International (AI), the official journal of Japanese Society of Allergology (JSA) is one of the SPARC Japan Publishing Partners. After AI joined the SPARC Japan in 2004, JSA ceased publishing AI with a publisher based abroad and started its own publishing. At the same time JSA canceled the online distribution on a subscription basis, and transferred the contents to the journal platform freely accessible. Since AI was included in PubMed in 2006, the number of the AI articles cited has increased. As a result AI has been selected for the journal coverage of Web of Science. Dr. Hirohisa Saito, Editor-in-Chief of AI will review those changes. Taking into account of the success of the Open Access publishing in medical journals and the development of the competitors, he will also talk about the future challenge of AI.

Karger's initiative around OA
(Yosuke Kojima)

Since its foundation, Karger has been involved in scholarly communication as an independent academic publisher. Karger has provided scholarly information to the researchers around the globe via print journals from its beginning. At the internet/online era, with variety of needs coming from subscribers and subscribing institutions as well as the authors, Karger also faces the turning point of journal publishing. On this presentation, it shares where Karger is and its plan.
