General admissions

General admission is the most basic type of entrance to the Department of Informatics, SOKENDAI. It is open to every applicant, regardless of nationality or place of residence. There are two enrollment periods per year: April and October. The admissions process starts with submission of an application package, including your CV, transcripts, a summary of your past research, and an outline of your proposed research at NII. Then the Department of Informatics conducts an entrance examination as following schedule. The examinations for those entering in April: In summer (late-August or early-September) or in winter (late January or early-February)

Method of Selection

Our entrance examination is composed of an on-site interview.

*The guideline is only available in Japanese. Please refer following English translation of required documents at your convenient. (In case of any inconsistency between the Japanese version and the English version, the Japanese version shall prevail.)
*You can request printed guideline which includes each application form at contact form.

For 5-year course

  1. Application Form (Form1)
    -Two ID photos(4.5×3.5 cm, taken within the past 3 months). Affix the photos to the Application form and the Admission Ticket for the Examination(Form 1).
  2. Curriculum Vitae(Form 1-2)
  3. Application fee:30,000 Japanese yen(Form 10)
    Non-refundable.
    -Excluding MEXT Scholarship Students. Submit a certificate of MEXT Scholarship Student instead.
    -Applicants who will take preliminary screening for admission requirements, should pay the fee after the screening.
  4. Undergraduate official transcripts of the academic record with the grading scale and GPA(Copy)
    If the certificate can't be issued in English, the official English translation must be attached.
  5. Certificate of graduation or prospective graduation (Bachelor's Degree)(Original)
    If the certificate can't be issued in English, the official English translation must be attached.
  6. Statement of Purpose(Form 2)
  7. Documents showing the applicant's research ability (graduation thesis, papers, reports, etc.)(Free Form)
    If applicable.
  8. Stamped and addressed envelope (Attached in guideline)
    Write your name, address and zip code on the front and affix 682 yen in stamps. Admission Ticket for the Examination will be sent you.
  9. Recipient's Address Label(Form 11)
  10. Permission for Taking the Entrance Examination written by managerial level/chair of department(For employed person: Form 6)(For students: Free Form)
    Only for applicants who are employed or enrolled in another university(excluding part-time workers or students who will graduate before the admission).
  11. Proof of English skill(TOEFL or TOEIC scores taken within the past five years. IELTS score taken within the past two years.)
    Submit one of the following:
    -TOEFL Official Score Report
    -TOEFL Examinee's Score Report(Copy)
    -TOEIC Official Score Certificate(Original)
    -IELTS Academic Module Test Report Form (Original)
    *TOEFL-ITP and TOEIC-IP are unacceptable.
    *IELTS-General Training Module is unacceptable.
    Applicants who submit the copy of TOEIC Official Score Certificate or IELTS Test Report Form must bring the original on the interview day.
    Applicants need to submit an official score report of English proficiency(TOEIC or TOEFL or IELTS).
    However, the above requirement does not apply to an applicant who is an English native speaker or earned a bachelor's degree from an institution in which English was the primary institutional language of instruction.
    An applicant may be asked to submit additional documents which prove that the applicant is an English native speaker or earned a degree satisfying the above condition.
  12. Only for Department of Informatics applicants(Form 9)
  13. Photocopy of Residence card (Zairyu card)
    Only for foreign applicant. If the applicant residents abroad, copy of passport is required.

For 3-year course

  1. Application Form (Form1)

  6. Summary of Previous Research Experience(Form 3)
  7. List of research presentations and publications(Form 4)
    Write N/A if not applicable.
  8. Master thesis(two copies)(Free Form)
    If applicable.
    Write "Master thesis" on the front page.
  9. Recipient's Address Label(Form 11)
  10. Research proposal(Form 5)
  11. Stamped and addressed envelope(Attached in guideline)
    Write your name, address and zip code on the front and affix 682 yen in stamps. Admission Ticket for the Examination will be sent you.
  12. Recommendation letter from a person who can comment on the applicant's research ability(e.g. the applicant's academic supervisor etc.)(Free Form)
    The letter should be sealed up by the recommender.
    The letter should be addressed to:

  13. Permission for Taking the Entrance Examination written by managerial level/chair of department(For employed person: Form 6)
