1. Description of Service

The inventory of Japanese historical documents database, created by the Historiographical Institute of the University of Tokyo, was scheduled to be made available by NACSIS-IR starting on April 1, 1995. NACSIS has the full cooperation and support of the Institute in this undertaking.

Database of Japanese Traditional Music by Modern Composers now available on this April 1. It contains catalogue information on the contemporary music which has been composed mostly in the post-World War II years for Japanese traditional musical instruments.

1. 1 Inventory of Japanese Historical Documents Database

(1) Sources
These include documents covered by historiographical materials, some of which take the form of "Eisha-bon" (full-size tracings made with brush and India ink on thin Japanese paper) and which are owned by the Institute.

(2) Coverage and Number of records
At the outset, those documents of Todai-ji Temple which are kept at locations other than the Todai-ji Temple Library and which add up to about 2,200 materials, are included. As soon as the Historiographical Institute of the University of Tokyo is ready to offer the data in its possession, the coverage will be expanded.

(3) Main Items
The data includes all the particulars given in historical documents as well as the formats of the documents themselves. Data can be searched by entering character strings (consisting of 1 to 5 characters).

(4) Use of Database

1.2 Database of Japanese Traditional Music by Modern Composers

(1) Sources
Names of composers, years when the pieces were composed, titles, instruments, play times and other catalogue data on the contemporary music composed mostly in the post-World War II years for traditional Japanese instruments. Audio data (actual sound) is not included.

(2) Coverage and Number of records
Included are pieces composed to date, primarily those which have been aired by the Japanese Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) since 1963. The number of pieces stood at approx. 1,700 when the service was commenced.

(3) Main Items
Titles, composers, years when the pieces were composed, instruments, play times, availability of scores, etc.

(4) Use of Database
Calling Command is "JTMUSIC"

(5) Note
The database compiled by the Association for the International Exchange of Japanese Music is used for this database service, and this has been made possible thanks to the cooperation of the Association.

3. Service Charges
Each call to a database: Yen 30

Note that expenses relating to usage are issued each month as a total usage charge for all databases, with 3% consumption tax added.

1. Description of Service The following database services currently provided only in Japan will start to be provided overseas from July 1996.

Brief details of these databases are given below.

1.1 Scientific Papers

(2) Coverage and Number of records
Series 1: Electronics Currently contains data from 1989 onward. There were approximately 2,400 fulltext records and 4,900 abbreviated records without fulltext now, and this has increased by 900 fulltext records and 970 abbreviated records every year since then.

Series 2: Chemistry
Coverage varies depending on the journals. There were 14,500 records now, and this has increased by 2,100 records every year since then.

Series 5: Physical Sciences
Currently contains data from 1991 onward. There were 6,400 records now, and this has increased by 2,000 records every year since then.

(3) Main Items
Title, author(s), affiliation, journal title, abstract, text, etc. In addition, each page including figures, tables, and photos is stored on optical disc.

(4) Use of Databases
Series 1: Electronics
Calling Command is "PAPER1".

Series 2: Chemistry
Calling Command is "PAPER2".

Series 5: Physical Sciences
Calling Command is "PAPER5".

After retrieval, the corresponding page of the journal can be sent to your facsimile.

1.2 Electronic File of Academic Conference Papers

(1) Sources
Collection of the pre-publicized theses for the conventions of the following academic socities in Japan.

Coverage varies depending on the academic society. There were originally 151,000 records, and this has increased by 50,000 records every year since then.

(3) Main Items
Title, author(s), affiliation, host society, conference, etc.

In addition, each page including figures, tables and photos is stored on optical disc.

(4) Use of Database
Calling Command is "YOKO".

(5) Note
After retrieval, the corresponding page of the journal can be sent to your facsimile.

1.3 Clinical Case Reports

(1) Sources
Clinical case studies published in the journals of academic medical societies.

Coverage varies depending on the journals. There were 6,000 records now, and this has increased by 2,000 records every year since then.

(3) Main Items
Title, author(s), affiliation, journal title, abstract, text, etc.

In addition, each page including figures, tables, and photos is stored on optical disc.

(4) Use of Database
Calling Command is "SHOREI".

(5) User Qualification
Medical researchers or librarians who retrieve data on their behalf.

(6) Note
The thesaurus files can be viewed during database retrieval. After retrieval, the corresponding page of the journal can be sent to your facsimile.

1.4 Research Bulletin of the NACSIS Online

(1) Sources
Papers published in "Research Bulletin of the NACSIS", which reports R & D acitivities by NACSIS.

(2) Coverage and Number of records
Currently contains data from 1991 onward. There were originally 35 records, and this has increased by approximately 15 records every year since then.

(3) Main Items
Title, author(s), affiliation, journal title, abstract, text, etc.

In addition, each page including figures, tables, and photos is stored on optical disc.

(4) Use of Database
Calling Command is "NACSISRB".

(5) Note
After retrieval, the corresponding page of the journal can be sent to your facsimile.

Also the same page can be opened and accessed by Gopher (gopher://gopher.nacsis.ac.jp)

2. Access Method

3. Service Charges
3.1 Scientific Papers, Electronic File of Academic Conference Papers and Clinical Case Reports

For duration connected to each database : 50 yen / minute
For number of retrieved records from which detailed information was output to terminal : 13 yen / case
For number of sheets output to facsimile : 236 yen / sheet

Note that expenses relating to usage are issued each month as a total usage charge for all databases, with 3% consumption tax added.
